All the sheds were set up outside, not unsurprisingly, but it would have been nice to be able to look at them while staying dry. Fortunately the three of us were wearing waterproofs.

“That one’s nice,” Sam said, pointing to a huge marquee-sized building in dark wood that would probably qualify for its own postcode.

“Yeah, right,” Mark said. “It’s big enough to host a garden party inside it,”

“I think it’s bigger than our yard,” I said. Then I got a look at the price and turned away, feeling faint.

“I just said it was nice, that’s all.” Sam shrugged.

“How come we got lumbered with the kid anyway?” Mark asked me.

It must have been loud enough for Sam to hear because he said, “Because I’m irresistible.”

“More like irrepressible,” I said, watching him wander up and down.

“Or irri-pestible,” Mark said.

“That’s not a word.” Sam looked over his shoulder at us and laughed.

Mark shook his head and we continued to look around.

“What about that one?” Mark pointed to a shed in a far corner.

“That’s more like it,” I said, once I’d seen the price. Though as soon as I got inside the shed I bumped my head.

“I think we ought to choose one where the roof is highest in the middle.” The one I’d just gone inside had a sloping roof.

“They call them apex roofs,” Sam said.

“Hark at the expert,” Mark said, pinching one of Sam’s cheeks.

“Geroff.” Sam stepped back and onto my foot.

“I thought you wanted one with a greenhouse bit on it?” I questioned, shaking my foot.

“Have you seen the prices of those?” Mark pointed.

“Apart from tomatoes, what else could you use a greenhouse add-on thingy for?” I asked.

“I could bring on bedding plants.”

I wasn’t sure what he was going on about, but I didn’t want to show my ignorance.

“And there’s always the chance I might start to grow fruit.”

“Wouldn’t you need a heater for that?” Sam asked.

“Yeah, you’ve got a point there.” Mark conceded. “I could also grow flowers.” He lowered his voice. “Because I’d love to give you flowers I’d grown myself.”

“Aw, sweet,” Sam said. Evidently the kid had excellent hearing.

“If you need a greenhouse, then we’ll have a greenhouse,” I told Mark, brooking no argument.

His expression told me I’d be getting lucky later. I couldn’t wait to get home.

The garden centre didn’t have that many models to choose from, so Mark suggested a visit to the shed place we’d gotten the leaflet from. I agreed, but realised I’d have to wait for my reward.

It took some time to get to the “shed shop,” as Sam called it.

“At least the rain’s stopped,” Sam said when we had finally arrived and were picking our way around the puddles in the pot-holed car park. “Wow, this is what I call a lot of sheds.” He turned a corner and disappeared from view.

Everywhere we looked were sheds. Large, small, and many in between. There were wooden sheds, metal sheds, and some I wasn’t sure what they were made of…plastic or fibreglass maybe.

We spent about an hour looking round.
